What are the different types of Psychotherapy?

To date, there are over 200 different recognized forms of Psychotherapy practiced throughout the world. Each has its purpose and each has a place. Many of these are quite effective at treating a large range of issues. Some forms of treatment like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Interpersonal Therapy have even been shown to be as successful as medication when treating mood disorders like depression.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy focuses on underlying maladaptive thought patterns and the way they influence our beliefs and behavior. Therapy tends to be problem focused and goal-directed.

Behavioral Therapy
Behavioral Therapy is a present based therapy that uses functional analysis to focus on replacing unhealthy reactions and self-destructive behaviors with healthier ones.

Interpersonal Therapy

Interpersonal Therapy works to improve people’s communication patterns and how they relate to each other by helping the patient identify their past emotions, where they are coming from and how they affect current mood and behavior.

Internal Family Systems
Internal Family Systems Therapy aims to work with the multiplicity of the mind and help the client discover and differentiate their true core “Self” from which they can help resolve their difficult thoughts and feelings and help heal the many parts of the mind that get in their way.

Humanistic-Existential Psychotherapy
Humanistic-Existential Psychotherapy focuses on improving a clients self awareness and personal growth by examining past, present and future experience. It emphasizes “free will,” the ability to make choices that are not dictated by heredity or past conditioning in order to find our own unique meaning in life.

Psychodynamic Therapy
Psychodynamic Therapy is used to improve a clients self awareness by thoroughly exploring their past dysfunctional relationships and its unconscious influence on their present feelings and behavior in present day life.

Brief Therapy
Brief Therapy focuses on a specific present day problem and works on creating direct interventions to help create direct resolution.

Client Centered Therapy
Client Centered Therapy is a non-directive approach to therapy where the client sets the content and the pace of the therapy sessions while the therapist helps them explore and understand their feelings for themselves.

Couples Counseling
Couples Counseling helps couples and partners to resolve their differences and improve their overall ability to relate to one another.

Family Systems Therapy
Family Systems Therapy works with families to resolve dysfunctional patterns and nurture change in order to improve overall emotional health of the familial unit.

Multicultural Counseling
Multicultural Counseling is often used to help the client deal with a multitude of cross-cultural issues that arise between differences of values, lifestyle and beliefs of two or more cultures.

Play Therapy
Play Therapy is generally used with young children as a natural means for them to safely manage, explore and heal emotional and psychological trauma.

EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing uses a specific set of treatment protocols in order to help a client reprocess past, present and future trauma and distress.

Hypnotherapy
Hypnotherapy uses the hypnotic trance and the power of suggestions in order to alleviate psychological, emotional or even physical discomfort and help the client to improve overall health and well-being.

Life Coaching
Life Coaching uses a form of instruction and motivation in order to help the client set and achieve a specific set of goals and improve overall growth and development.
